The Pantheon in Rome on a cloudy day

Rome is beautiful, but when it rains, the ancient cobblestones become slick, puddles form everywhere, and walking becomes a splashy chore. Many tourists look at the forecast and ask: "Should I cancel my bus tour?"

The Answer: No, it is actually one of the best things to do in Rome when it rains.

The Rolling Umbrella

Think of the Hop-On Hop-Off bus as a mobile, heated viewing platform.

  • The Setup: All double-decker buses in Rome have a roof covering the front half of the upper deck. Or, they have a fully retractable roof that they close in bad weather.
  • Lower Deck: The downstairs is completely enclosed, climate-controlled, and has huge windows.
  • The Perk: You move from the Colosseum to the Vatican without getting a drop of water on you.

The "Moody Rome" Aesthetic

Rome in the rain is incredibly dramatic.

  • Color Pop: The wet pavement reflects the streetlights and car lights, creating a cinematic look.
  • The Stones: The travertine and marble of the monuments turn darker and more contrasting when wet.
  • Photography: You can snap photos through the window without risking your camera getting soaked. The droplets on the window can add an artistic flair.

Strategy for Rainy Days

  1. Stay On: Instead of hopping off at every stop, treat the bus as a 2-hour movie. Sit back, listen to the full audio commentary, and watch the city go by.
  2. Museum Hopping: Use the bus to go door-to-door between indoor attractions.
    • Hop off at Vatican (spend 4 hours inside the Museums).
    • Hop off at Santa Maria Maggiore (huge indoor basilica).
    • Hop off at Barberini (visit the National Gallery).
  3. Avoid the Open Back: Obviously, the open-air section at the very back of the top deck will get wet. Unless you have a poncho and want to feel the elements, grab a seat in the covered section early.

Best Indoor Stops

  • Eataly: Some extended bus routes (check the map!) go near Ostiense/Piramide. Eataly is a massive multi-story Italian food hall. It is the perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon eating pasta and shopping for wine.
