Detailed info on wheelchair access for Rome's sightseeing buses. Ramps, designated spaces, and the best stops for avoiding cobblestones.

Rome is notoriously difficult for travelers with limited mobility. The "sampietrini" (cobblestones) are uneven, curbs are high, and elevators in the Metro often don't work. However, the Hop-On Hop-Off buses can be a genuine lifeline.
By EU law, all major sightseeing buses (Big Bus, City Sightseeing, I Love Rome) must be accessible.
Wheelchair users generally cannot access the upper deck. The only way up is a narrow, steep spiral staircase.
Not all stops are created equal. Some drop you into a mess of cobblestones; others are smooth.
Good: St. Peter's / Vatican. The Via della Conciliazione is paved and smooth. The ramps into the Basilica are excellent.
Good: Piazza Venezia. Largely paved and flat.
Good: Circo Massimo. Flat gravel paths are manageable for most robust wheelchairs.
Challenging: Colosseum. The area is paved, but can be uneven.
Very Challenging: Spanish Steps / Barberini. This area is hilly, and sidewalks can be narrow and crowded.
The bus is often easier and more reliable than the Rome Metro system. It allows you to see the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the Center without navigating kilometres of difficult pavement.
