A map of the IOBUS routes in Rome

You arrive in Rome, grab a brochure, and unfold a map that looks like a bowl of spaghetti. Colored lines everywhere. What do they mean? Let's decode the system.

The Core: The "City Center" Loop

This is the main line that 95% of tourists use.

  • Color on Map: Usually Red or Pink.
  • Stops: The classic 8 or 9 stops (Termini, Colosseum, Vatican, etc.).
  • Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours for a full loop without getting off.
  • Area: It stays inside the ancient Aurelian Walls and crosses the river to the Vatican. It does not go far out into the countryside.
  • Frequency: High. Every 10-20 minutes.

The Extension: The "Catacombs" Line

Some operators (notably Big Bus and the specialized Archeobus) run a secondary line.

  • Color on Map: Usually Purple or Blue.
  • Destination: This line heads south, out of the center, to the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) and the Catacombs (San Callisto / San Sebastiano).
  • Why take it? The Appian Way is the "Queen of Roads," lined with cypress trees and ancient tombs. It is stunning and hard to reach by public metro.
  • The Catch: This line runs much less frequently (e.g., once an hour). You must plan carefully. If you miss the bus at the Catacombs, it's a long wait for the next one.
  • Availability: Check if it runs every day. Often it is seasonal or weekend-only.

Interchanges: How to switch

The huge hub is Termini Station. This is where all lines start and end, and where you can usually switch between the Center Loop and the Catacombs Loop. Piazza Venezia is another common interchange point where lines might overlap.

App vs. Paper Maps

  • Digital: Use the operator's app or Google Maps to find the exact physical location of the bus stop post. In Rome, the stop might be 50 meters down the street from where the map pin looks like it is.
  • Paper: Use the paper map to understand the context—to see where the Colosseum is relative to the Vatican so you can plan your day.
