This stop is usually the first one after Termini Station. Because everyone is excited to get to the Colosseum (the next stop), many tourists stay on the bus. Don't make that mistake. Hopping off here reveals one of Rome's greatest treasures.

Why Visit Santa Maria Maggiore?

It is one of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome (along with St. Peter's, St. John Lateran, and St. Paul Outside the Walls). Uniquely, it is the only one to have retained its core structure from early Christian times (5th century), giving it a raw, ancient feel that the others lack.

Highlights to Look For

  1. The Mosaics: Look at the nave walls. Those mosaics are from the 5th century—they are some of the oldest Christian art in existence, depicting biblical stories like a graphic novel.
  2. The Ceiling: Look up! The coffered wooden ceiling is gilded with the very first gold brought back from the Americas by Christopher Columbus, gifted to the Pope by the Spanish monarchs.
  3. Bernini's Tomb: The architect who defined Roman Baroque, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, is buried here. Unlike his grandiose sculptures, his tomb is a humble floor step near the altar. It takes a keen eye to find it.

Practical Info

  • Entry: Free! You just need to pass through a metal detector control.
  • Dress Code: This is a church. Shoulders and knees must be covered. No tank tops or short shorts.
  • Time needed: 30-45 minutes is plenty.

The Monti Neighborhood Edge

Behind the Basilica lies the upper edge of the Monti district. If you exit the church and walk down Via Panisperna, you will find yourself in a charming street of artisan shops, ivy-covered buildings, and wine bars. It is a fantastic detour before hopping back on the bus to continue your journey to Ancient Rome.
